LEAP Hamcation Planning - 2009

This page is here to serve as a public checklist for LEAP's booth at the 2009 Hamcation.

Task Who Details and Status
Facilities
Arrange for the table Aaron Done, same table we've had in previous years (next to the coffee!)
Projector Phil LEAP owns a projector, not a problem.
Projection screen JT Hayden Has one in his truck, will bring it to the Hamcation with him.
Vendor badges Pick up on Thursday or Friday
Banner Fuzzy Sitting in his garage, he will bring Friday morning.
Internet feed Ralph
  • We need to visit the fairgrounds and do a site survey, but it looks like we'll have a wireless connection through Omnispring, who is providing the bandwidth and physical co-location for the server which hosts both LEAP's web site and my own server.
  • If that doesn't happen, JT Hayden has two AT&T data cards and has offered to let us use them. They are PCMCIA, so if we do this they would only work for the one machine they are plugged into (unless somebody wants to turn their linux laptop into a router, which might not be a bad idea anyway, just to show off the flexibility of linux.)
On-Air Demo Station
Permission to erect antenna Aaron Aaron says...
I've talked to some of the leadership (in an unofficial capacity) and while I don't have an official permission slip, we can set up equipment. Obviously safety and common sense applies (we don't want to damage anything -- the facility or our reputation).
Radio, computer, etc. John I need to set it all up and test it, using HRD to make sure the hardware is working correctly. At the show I plan to use the same Ham Puppy Linux CD we'll be selling, so I need a copy of that ISO once it's ready.
Antenna John I have a 5-BTV antenna, but it hasn't been used in several years. Need to get with Phil and clean and tune it, as well as arranging for transportation to and from the fairgrounds.
Coax JT Hayden JT has a roll of RG-8X with about 200 feet on it. I have some PL-259 ends, we just need some reducers to make them fit on RG-8X. That shouldn't be an issue, since Tower Electronics will probably be right in front of us again this year- and if they're not there, I'm sure somebody else will have some for sale.
Antenna mounting ? Not sure if it's going to be on the roof, strapped to the light pole next to the back door, or what... May need to visit the fairgrounds and eyeball the area to figure out the best way to mount it. Will need the appropriate mounting hardware for whatever we end up choosing. Need radials if mounted above ground - ???
Making CDs
Select distros LEAP board Done. We will be burning:
  • 100 Fedora 10 DVD
  • 100 Linux Mint 6
  • 100 Puppy with Ham software
Danny Burdick also mentioned that he was going to burn some CDs and bring them as well- not sure what those will be, or if he wants or needs paper envelopes or nice-looking paper labels for the CDs, done by a real artist (i.e. Phil's wife.)
Buy blank CDs/DVDs Phil Done. People who burn CDs using their own blanks will be able to trade their finished CDs for these blanks - however if you plan to make CDs, make sure we know about it first so we don't "over sell" the blanks we have.
Burn 100 Fedora 10 DVDs Fuzzy Conner In progress.
Burn 100 Linux Mint CDs John Done.
Ham Puppy ISO Phil Phil is testing a new "beta" release of fldigi". Once he knows it works correctly, he will make a master ISO file.
Burn 100 Ham Puppy CDs Phil
  • Waiting for ISO
  • Phil has volunteered to burn the CDs.
CD Labeling and Packaging
Decide on packaging Sounds like we're going with paper envelopes rather than plastic slim-line or jewel boxes.
Paper envelopes John, Fuzzy John is donating 200, all white. Fuzzy is donating 100, also all white. Waiting to hear from Danny Burdick about what he plans to burn and whether or not he already has paper envelopes for the CDs he's making.
Design the CD labels Phil's wife (?) She's an artist, I'm sure they'll look good.
Print CD labels Phil In progress.
Assembly LEAP The CD's, labels, and paper envelopes will all be brought to the installfest on 2009-02-07. Anybody who's there can volunteer to put labels on CDs and put CDs into envelopes. I don't see us having any shortage of volunteers.
